Training Camp Series: Part 1 - The Decision

Training Camp Series: Part 1 - The Decision

Training camp has officially begun. Over the next eight weeks, I’ll be documenting the journey to my third and final charity martial arts event, where I’ll be stepping into the cage for my first MMA bout. This article marks the start of following that process, and sharing the training, mindset, and lessons along the way.

When I set this challenge in January 2023, the goal was simple: compete in three charity combat sports events and raise £3,000 for mental health charities. Boxing came first, followed by Muay Thai, and now MMA completes the trilogy. Each event has represented more than competition. It has been about discipline, personal growth, and raising awareness for causes that matter.

I began this journey at the start of my sobriety, looking for structure and focus. Martial arts quickly became the foundation for both. It gave me routine, community, and purpose. Every hour in the gym, every tough session, and every lesson from a coach became part of a bigger picture: learning to grow through challenge rather than avoiding it.

Now, heading into this final camp, I know what lies ahead. The early mornings. The late nights. The balance between a full-time job, training, recovery, and daily life. It is demanding, but it’s also what makes it meaningful. Each camp teaches me more about resilience and consistency, not just in training, but in every part of life.

To me, this event is about more than the result. It represents three years of commitment, discipline, and growth, both personal and professional. It’s about finishing what I started, staying true to the process, and showing that with structure, focus, and the right mindset, anyone can take on a challenge like this.
